And the Disease Played On

From Reuters AlertNet (HIV patients at higher risk from flu, WHO says, May 2, 2009):
The United Nations agency said people with immunodeficiency diseases -- including the AIDS virus -- will most likely be vulnerable to health complications from the H1N1 strain, as they are from regular seasonal flu, which kills between 250,000 and 500,000 people a year.

HIV and the new flu strain could also mix together in a dangerous way, as has occurred with HIV and tuberculosis, the WHO said in guidance for health workers on its website.

h/t Drudge.

This is the slippery slope of the successful political pressure applied to prevent HIV/AIDS patients from being quaranteed and their condition documented and disclosed.  We wouldn't be having this conversation, nor would the infection rates around the world be what they are, if we had valued human life rather than worry about the self-esteem of those infected.

Maybe HIV/AIDS becoming airborne won't happen this time, but we won't have dodged a bullet, we've simply delayed it.

Public health should not be a game of political special interest groups.
